RANDOM THOUGHTS (3/1/21)

MONDAY -- Have you noticed how we have casually slipped into lazier language? When did veggies become a thing? Like it's too hard to use four syllables rather than two. Cra cra for wacky doodle, insane behavior.  App for application. Don't get me started on "smoothies". Apparently we are too tired to chew our food but we will spend oodles of time cutting up and blending. Sorry, if I'm not chewing it ain't food.

Shots in the arm is driving me crazy both from a grammatical standpoint and just a general "ickiness" from the mental image. Cries of fake news are particularly asinine. Apparently some people listen to "news opinions" or "facebook" rather than having to do the hard work of research and discernment. There is a difference, if you're paying attention, when they say overtly or subtly "in my opinion". Duhh

BONUS: As I slipped wraith-like down the stairs at 5:30 am to perform my first 2 mile walk the lack of floodlight shining through the window (which burned out last week) failed to reveal I was one step short of a full case (stair that is). CRASH. The fall wasn't so bad, it was the getting up off the floor. The OH awakened and came down to see if I was bloody and broken  at the bottom of the stairs. Later after he replaced the lights I said "thanks for replacing the outside lights" thinking about the opening I just gave for a perfect straight line which never came. I assumed there would be a crack about having to wake up early to cover emergency treatment. I asked later why he didn't say it and he replied, "Well I was thinking it"....

TUESDAY -- Isn't it ironic that the Atty General candidate Merrick Garland said his first focus would be on the Capitol riot and pursuit of white supremacy issues. Oddly enough the Federal Justice Department actually got its start doing exactly that during reconstruction after the CIVIL WAR. We have not come so far...

BONUS: If someone gives a compliment is it really necessary to repeat it numerous times? I believe most remember the moment without repetition. When repeated ad nauseam it becomes less complimentary.

WEDNESDAY -- Zoom meeting to discuss logistics for recording the Memorial Opening Ceremony for the Safety Conference at the Lansing Center downtown, which is technically closed. It will be so odd to actually see and work with people face to face (mask to mask) rather than through a 17 inch screen. However with the whole place to ourselves I think proper distance can be maintained with only one on-camera at a time; the others basically deck fluff until it's their turn. Even when viewed "virutally" the ceremony will be moving with a Fire Dept color guard, a bagpiper and the ceremonial ringing of the great bell after the names of those who died in work-related incidents are read. 63 deaths this year, roughly double previous years and almost half are due to covid-related exposures from physicians, nurses, maintenance workers to registration clerks in hospitals. It is sobering.

My role after the ceremonious ringing of the bell and Amazing Grace has been played by the bagpiper is to welcome everyone to the conference, read the legislative proclamation and introduce the keynote. What an act to follow. I am still puzzling over how to make that particular transition.  It calls for seriousness touched with rah-rah to kick off the event. Ouch.

BONUS:  Also kicked off an investigation into a group trying to piggy back onto the MSC through less than ethical means.  Basically after sitting in on a rehearsal for another project I had a "something's rotten in ..." moment. Suffice it to say I basically threw a grenade into a pond and the ripples are still reverberating.

THURSDAY -- Continuation of the bonus above. Rules were written and approved by the Chairman of the Board and myself as President and mandates were made to nip the pending bru-ha-ha from going any further. Sorry for any innocents affected, but the integrity and credibility of our 90 year organization was preserved. Not on my watch, I believe I said at one point...

FRIDAY -- Calmer day. Interview questions written for podcast and delivered to the interviewee,  Monday should be interesting.  Thrilled and amused that "Neanderthal thinking" is the consternation in the chicken coops moment of the day. Much better than insurrections and 3rd grade BS from "he who shall not be named". They're really reaching these days...

SATURDAY -- how far would you go to expose or right a wrong even though it may cost you? I know it was a television show but would we risk humiliation, reputation, livelihood or even our lives to do the right thing? I've played in that sandbox on a smaller scale and it is sometimes a lonely path. But after a decision is made and carried out oddly, you sleep better.

BONUS:  Robins, robins, robins!  Ever since we decided not to use robins in our Spring spotting game this year they are practically thumbing their noses/beaks at us and flocking everywhere. The harbinger of Spring has been surprisingly active this winter.

SUNDAY -- Relief package passed after 12 hours of debate without a single Republican vote. Though they voted for earlier relief packages and breezily rammed through tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations (tax breaks that phase out for the middle class in 2021) which basically blew up the national deficit. Now they're whining about the hit to the deficit while conveniently forgetting that this money goes directly to the people who are going to spend it; not pay their shareholders, send it offshore or buy another yacht - major LOL. To explain it further, trickle UP is much more efficient and effective than trickle DOWN.

Further, to get people back to work for decent wages the next agreement should be to rebuild our sadly sagging infrastructure. What a concept. Needed repairs and rebuilding by hard-working Americans who will directly impact the economy. As the GNP is 60 -70% (depending on which Econ Prof you had) driven by domestic spending what's not to like?
