RANDOM THOUGHTS (MARCH 8, 2021)

MONDAY -- International Women's Day. Success today as a "kick-butt" crusader and a reminder that I'm still thought of as a whiny woman in the same day. What else is new, that's just life. As the clamor gets louder over Gov Cuomo, I recall my days as a Personnel Director and my adventures as a  woman in a non-traditional profession. In the first I had to mitigate the anguish and fight for accountability and in the second realize that credibility is hard-won and insults must be swallowed whole.

I learned that both sides have their issues. Male supervisors were afraid of being falsely accused and females were afraid to complain. My take is most men are decent and know not to make women feel uncomfortable purposely and many women who have suffered harassment and unwanted sexual advances learn they will not be believed. The women usually had to quit or take a different job.

I had to walk the line between the two. But when multiple women finally feel comfortable enough to out a "horn dog" we should listen.

TUESDAY -- Very moving ceremony today at a very empty Lansing Center. Three firefighters in dress blues, an iconic bell, the color guard ceremony, a bagpiper in glorious dress and the sadness of the 63 names of those who died this past year. All of us masked which is especially poignant.  We had our moments of hilarity of course as we decided a bagpiper playing as he ascended very steep stairs was probably not the "safest" course of action. After a couple of run-throughs, the final recording was done in one take.... until the head of MIOSHA said "sorry guys, but AJ didn't have his mask on as he walked to and from the podium." Shoot. Should probably not enshrine that moment especially as we all had been diligent.  Quick re-enactment and then MIOSHA Bart said "oh darn, I had my coat unbuttoned when we did the retake." LOL.  That's whats editing is for so take 3. Then one of the firefighters mentioned he hadn't taken a deep breath since donning his very form-fitting uniform jacket. Been awhile I guess.

WEDNESDAY -- A small bru of last week's bru-ha-ha raised it's little head today, but moving on is the only option. Recorded our first podcast today with the other host which went very well. I have three in the hopper and am learning every day of what works and creating a distilled script from the original questionnaire is definitely the way to go. Scrambling to understand and make friends with my brand-new green board (which is necessary for any background so parts of you don't disappear, ghost-like on camera). Takes us back to the equipment we used when the OH did portraits. Appears I may have to set up a studio, complete  with lights to do this right and not look like an afterthought if we use any of the video later. So far no success.  Still getting a "whole lot of shakn' going on" on one side of the screen. Argghh

THURSDAY -- Scramble time as we get closer to the Conference. Our Executive Director is pulling miracles out of her proverbial nether regions to keep everybody on track. Inserted myself into one group I'm familiar with to gently get them on board and on time.  Technically I went over "someone's" head to resolve the issue. The OH said I certainly am a rabble rouser lately.

FRIDAY --  Meeting with similarly and fully vaccinated friends for dinner at a REAL restaurant tonight! I texted back FREEDOM. It is a giddy feeling having had both shots. Apparently we seniors are jetting to Florida en masse according to all reports, after a quick squeeze of the grand kids. We have been lucky that our buddy has been in a bubble so we have had reasonable access to his backwards hugs. He backs up for the hug, not sure why; I'm not a grabby, kissy Nana, but he gamely allows the hug so that's all I ask.

Made a Woolworth's-type ice box cheese cake for dessert tonight after dinner. I am so proud. Hope it goes with wine as we tend to imbibe on any and all occasions with friends. Both red and white in the same outing-horrors. Though I started the evening with a Guiness and a Greek salad. (not a fish eater)

UPDATE:  Lemon cheese cake was a critical success as recipe was asked for. Yay. And it does go with Chardonnay-who knew?

DIGRESS: Speaking of Woolworths, we had many a dime store counter adventure with my Grandmother who was perpetually hungry. We loved the fact that whenever we went out with her, we were bound to get a meal even if we just ate or were heading back for a meal. Mother was not pleased. Though I rememer Grandma complaining one holiday that the servers were very surly. Probably because it was a holiday,  and two, they drew the short straw and had to work.  She was very demanding too of course. On a trip to Florida with her it took so long to hotfoot (or wheelchair service it) to the next gate we missed the plane. She insisted they put us up in a hotel for the night until the next flight.  That sure would not happen today.  But she told them we didn't need our luggage. Speak for yourself old lady, but of course I didn't say anything. Trip to Florida and all that.

SATURDAY -- It might be imagination but I swear the priest is looking farther away like the wrong end of the binoculars. We're already six feet apart and every other row. Oh, apparently they moved the altar back as more of us "shot up" people are returning to church. I must be tired, I was the only one who stood up when we read the stewardship prayer. I didn't even notice until I sat down. LOL. Just act natural....

SUNDAY -- The time change doesn't affect me. The OH goes on an on about losing an hour sleep that doesn't come back all summer because it's light until 10:00 -boo-hoo. Got up at my usual 5:30 (4:30) and did my first two miles. Performed my weekly housekeeping, such as it is. Those toilets aren't going to clean themselves. Ran a load of wash. Worked on podcast scripts for most of the day and then took a break to read the 3 day accumulation of newspapers - my reading material is really piling up. I need a special place that's out of the way but accessible enought to bug me that I'm behind in my reading.

Anyway, perched on a stool in the kitchen reading my papers I was rudely awakened when my chin hit the counter.  Who the double hockey sticks falls asleep upright on a kitchen stool? Well I guess I wasn't as upright as I thought. Funny I dreamed I was awake. Which reminds me of the dream I had this am of climbing to the roof of a factory and the Manager bitching me out about it. Have no idea what that nocturnal admission is supposed to signify.  Back to my pile of books...and the crossword puzzle.....
